When my husband and I were ready to start a family, it was an exciting time for us. We had been married for 3 years and we're in a good space. We got our basic tests done to make sure everything was fine. But month after month led to further disappointment. More than a year passed by and we still hadn't conceived.
We scheduled an appointment with Dr Sonia Malik, who ran some tests for us. The results this time around confirmed our worst fears. Infertility can be very isolating. My husband and I had always led very active lives. I teach yoga for a living and he worked out regularly. We never thought infertility could be knocking on our doors. No one does.
Luckily for us, deciding on a specialist wasn't as daunting as it is for a lot of people. We knew right from the beginning that Dr Sonia Malik is our person. The love, affection and understanding she shows towards her patients are unparallel. A good doctor is half your battle won.
The first step toward your IVF journey is that you and your partner should be on the same page. You both should want it to work, rather than one person going in with the attitude that this is another long battle. When IVF was our only option, it was our plan B that we knew would work out for sure. We hadn't ever envisaged that we could have a failed cycle. And so, when our first cycle failed in 2016, it set us back more than we thought it could. We were so attached to the outcome that we lost focus on the process. It also led us into a negative spiral for a few months, where we let go of our health and fitness for the next few months. I will not tell you not to worry, I will not tell you to stay strong at all times. I will tell you to take your time to grieve your missed chance, pick yourself back up, focus on yourself before you're ready for next time.
We did just that. Focused on ourselves, ate healthily, worked out, got fitter without an end goal in sight this time. The one thing we were sure of was that we were not going to go to a different doctor, as many had done and suggested.
Towards the end of 2017, we started getting ourselves tested again, getting minor procedures like Hysteroscopy and D&C out of the way. Detoxing completely for five weeks before the next planned cycle. This time we were more prepared for it, yet not attached to the outcome. We had a great support system, we had changed things we thought could make a difference.
Remember that it takes one egg and one sperm for it to work. And after many hardships, this was the cycle that worked for us. It gave us our beautiful baby girl! This baby wouldn't have been possible without Dr Malik, because not only was getting pregnant a challenge for us but remaining pregnant was a bigger challenge. Our daughter arrived prematurely at 26 weeks and after 80 days in the NICU, we brought our miracle baby home.
2018 has been the most stimulating for us, giving us our biggest blessing, yet teaching us important life lessons. It was our sheer determination and positivity that took us to the other side. We refused to give up on our dream and are parents today to a wonderful strong baby girl.
