Embryo Freezing

Embryo Freezing

Treatments such as IVF, ICSI and Egg donation often generate embryos that are surplus to the immediate requirements of the treatment. If these 'spare' embryos are of good quality they can be frozen and placed in storage by Embryo freezing.

IVF and related treatments normally involve stimulation of the ovaries to produce a number of eggs. We aim to fertilise all of the eggs removed in order to have a selection of embryos to grow as not all embryos have the potential to develop. As they are growing we are able to select the best quality for replacement.

Cryopreservation of embryos offers us several possibilities:

  • The storage of surplus embryos of good quality
  • Postponing embryo transfer is special cases like poor endometrium, or severe OHSS.
  • The preservation of reproductive potential of a woman prior to chemotherapy, radiotherapy or ovariectomy.
